In algebra, I should be focusing on quadratic equations, but my thoughts keep wandering. How can I make this happen? How can I let people know I’m available to be their love advisor–no, no–their love guru. Yes, guru. That adds a little more dazzle.

During lunch I tell Wren about it. I expect her to laugh at the idea, or try to change my mind, but she doesn’t. “I know I’m not going to be able to talk you out of it. I love you but your head is like a brick and you’re as stubborn as a mule.”

Ouch. “I think the word you’re looking for is tenacious,” I say, defending myself.

Wren nods. “Sure. But it’s not a terrible idea, I guess. I do think starting a business on a lie is not good, Dove.”

I think about what she’s saying. Lying is wrong but I’m lying for a good cause. “I would agree with you if I were charging money or something but I’m doing this for free. Basically charity. How can anyone be mad at that?”

Wren shakes her head as she squeezes mayo onto her turkey sandwich. “In that case, you should put flyers on all the bulletin boards. I’ll help you design some really cute ones. You can make sure to let them know that everything will be confidential, just like when people go to therapy. The therapist doesn’t tell their business to anyone else.”

“Yes! I’ll put that on my business cards. I’ll say they can even reach out anonymously. I know, I’ll make an email account just for that.”

Wren carefully cuts the crust off her sandwich with a plastic knife. “At least you found your calling. But I do wish we were on the soccer team together.”

If only she knew how much I really hated soccer. “Don’t worry. I’ll be at every one of your games cheering you on.”

This wasn’t a school activity that I could put on my college applications one day and I wouldn’t be paid for my wonderful advice, but it would give me tons of experience for my future job as a professional matchmaker.
